What Is A Herniated Disc Exactly?
62You've probably heard people say that they have a "slipped" disc or "ruptured" disc in their back. Sometimes they'll complain that their back "went out". What they're actually describing is most likely a herniated disc. This condition is common, and is the more often the source of back and leg pain.
Discs are the soft cushions found between the vertebrae which make up your spinal column. In the middle of the spinal column is the spinal channel, a hollow space which contains the spinal cord. The nerves that run throughout your body come from the spinal cord. The discs between the vertebrae allow the back to move freely, and act as shock absorbers.
The disc is composed of two principal sections. The external part (the ring) is composed of the hard cartilage which is composed of the series of rings. The center of the disc is a gelatinous substance called the pulposus of core. Herniations or ruptures of a disc happens when part of the center pushes itself out of eternal wall of the disc into the spinal channel, and puts pressure on the nerves.
Growing old, excessive weight, inaccurate lifting and the reduction of water in the discs all contribute to the decomposition of the discs, but the primary cause of a herniation or a bluge is unequal compression and torsion which is placed on the discs.
This unequal pressure is caused by imbalances in muscles which draw the spine out of it are normal position and then your body is forced to function in what I call a physical dysfunction. Everyone develops these dysfunctions with time and thereafter they damage enough to create the pain.
When treating, there are traditional herniated disc treatments such as ice/heat, ultrasounds, electric stimulation, cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory drugs and even surgery. While those can provide relief, it will be usually provisional if necessary.
But the principal problem with these traditional treatments is that they cannot fix or cure a herniated disc because they do not address the real cause of the problem. For example, even if you must have a surgery and obtain relief of pain, the fact is the dysfunctions which caused the herniated disc are not are initially addressed, and they will continue to place the unequal pressure and constraint on the discs and eventually you will probably have another problem with this disc, or others. Without identifying and addressing the fundamental cause of the problem, which is the physical dysfunctions caused by imbalances in muscles, you will probably continue to suffer with this condition and the continuous sudden blazes during the years.
If you were diagnosed with a herniated disc, or you ask whether your back pains can be caused by a herniated disc, you must identify and address the physical dysfunctions which cause your pain.

Habs, this is a great outline of how the back works. When people understand the basics of physiology, I believe it better enables them to manage both problems and strengthening of an area such as this in the body. Can you write a piece on shoulders -- so many swimmers and weight lifters/strength trainees suffer chronic pain in these areas.
